Early professional development
Following research in 2006, the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) has been working on a project to help and support the early professional development (EPD) of early career teachers. This research, carried out for the Agency by consultants ICM, examined the experiences of these teachers following their induction.
The aim of the project is to provide and share high quality guidance to:
- better support role induction planning for second and third-year teachers taking on additional responsibilities, and
- guide performance development planning for second-year teachers to ensure that it constructively builds on development experienced in the induction year.
This guidance is now available via the TDA website to teachers and others who support them in schools and local authorities.
The aim is now to evaluate the impact of this guidance on improving the coherence of teachers’ performance development experience in years two and three of teaching from the baselines established from research by ICM.
The guidance summarises the benefits of well-planned EPD for pupils, schools and teachers as:
- improving the quality of teaching and teachers’ confidence as a practitioner
- increasing teachers’ focus and understanding of their career development
- increasing the contributions teachers make in their second and third year of teaching to the work of their school and colleagues, and
- broadening teachers’ pedagogical skills and increasing teachers’ reflection on their classroom practice
The guidance for early career teachers is available here
